Community Impact : Childhood hunger in coffee villages today

Community Impact : Childhood hunger in coffee villages today

“I made a vow to myself: if I ever had the means, I would work tirelessly to eliminate childhood hunger in village schools like the one I attended.” – Wycliffe

Let me take you back…to my primary school days.

Every morning, I would walk 8 kilometres to school and 8 kilometres back home — 16 kilometres each day (and a lot more than the 10,000 steps our doctors prescribe these days).

The distance was challenging, but the real hardship was hunger. After the long walk, I would spend the day in class without lunch because my family couldn’t afford it — and often I wasn’t sure if there would be food waiting at home either.

Today, millions of children in Uganda still walk long distances to school and spend the day without food. With 35% of Uganda’s 45 million people under 15, this is a challenge the country cannot ignore.

Hunger should never be a concern for children in school; their primary focus should be learning, not worrying about their next meal.

Fighting hunger in Ugandan village schools isn’t just our mission; it’s personal.

Our commitment:

For every bag of coffee sold, we provide two school meals in Ugandan village schools.

This ensures children receive a nutritious school lunch which allows them to concentrate on their studies.

Why It Matters:

When children are well-fed, they can focus better, learn more effectively, and stay in school longer. This has a ripple effect: better education leads to more opportunities, healthier communities, and a brighter future for everyone.

For girls, in particular, staying in school can delay early pregnancies and miscarriages, leading to more empowered women and more robust communities.

Our Schools Feeding Program is so crucial that it has been embedded into our product and business profit and loss from the very beginning.

Using coffee to fight hunger in schools is a powerful tool. Powerful coffee = Powerful impact.

By purchasing our coffee you are helping us fight hunger in Ugandan schools!

Thank you!

Impact So Far:

For every pack of Blue Turaco Coffee sold, we provide 2 lunches in Ugandan village schools close to where our coffee is grown. Its impact goes way beyond filling stomachs - although it does a good job of that too.

Here we share the impact so far.
  • Schools Supported: 4, Kito Primary, Jungwe, Buyambi, and Kalamba-Naama
  • Children Supported: 1,200
  • Teachers Supported: 34 school teachers
School heads report
  • An increase in student enrolment
  • A decrease in dropout rates, especially during the dry season when food is scarce at home
  • Better school results
  • More girls are staying in school longer and continuing their education, which has profound benefits for society

Our Vision

Our goal is to reach 15,000 children through our feeding program in the next five years, ensuring they have access to a nutritionally rich lunch every school day. Additionally, we aim to support these schools in improving their academic performance through initiatives like the village schools teacher scheme. We will keep you updated.

We want to say thank you to anyone who has bought a pack of coffee or supported us. This is thanks to you!
