Why's a V60 called a V60?

Why's a V60 called a V60?

The Hario V60 has become one of the most popular way to brew coffee.

An upside-down cone you put filter paper (and ground coffee) into.

Hole in the bottom for the brewed coffee to pass through.

And ridges inside for air to pass through.

It’s name… is very apt!

The “V” - that’s the shape.
The “60” - that’s the angle of the “V”.

Just the right angle to allow water to pass through evenly over the coffee.
Turns out, its makers, Hario, have a knack for calling things are they are.

Hario means “the King of Glass”.

And they are indeed, kings of glass - they are specialist manufacturers of hardened, heat-proof glass. They started out making objects for science labs. Many years later, they made the first glass coffee syphon.

And many years after that, they made the V60 - out of porcelain.

Turns out, the king of glass has other talents!

Why use a V60?

A v60 creates a cleaner tasting coffee than other method for 2 reasons:

  1. The water passes through the grounds slowly >
  2. This means the coffee flavours are extracted more evenly >

This allows better separation of coffee oils and sediment which gets captured by the paper. Thanks, paper!

How to use a V60

1. Put on our playlist! (we made it specially)

2. Grind your coffee: Aim for a grind that is a bit finer than medium. Table salt rather than rock salt. You want 15g of coffee for 225g of water.

3.  Boil your water and leave it for a minute - you want it hot, but not boiling.

4. Pour 50ml of the hot water over the coffee in a circular motion - nice and steady. Gravity will pull the water through the grounds. Let it do its thing. This is called the First Bloom (cause the coffee swells up with the water then goes back down).

5. Repeat this til you've used up your water.

6. Taste your coffee - you can always add more water if you like.

7. Enjoy your coffee

8. Finish the playlist >>>

A playlist for you

We made this playlist for you to listen to while you make your coffee. It lasts 12 minutes. Put it on before your grind your coffee and do not even think about getting back to work til you've drank your coffee and finished the playlist. You deserve those 12 minutes.

ENJOY!
